Unseen Heroes proudly welcomed 35 inspiring young carers from across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions into the Te Ara Marama programme on July 19. The journey began with an unforgettable three-day camp at Tui Ridge Park, where these remarkable individuals embarked on their healing journey under the guidance of holistic healer Char Rain.

The camp offered a safe and nurturing environment for the young carers to express their feelings, process their emotions, and connect with others who share similar experiences. It was a space designed to assure them that they are not alone, while also providing a blend of fun activities that fostered lasting memories and deep friendships.

The young carers, who are dedicated to supporting family members with disabilities, illnesses, mental health challenges, and addictions, were joined by their whanau, who are enthusiastic about their continued participation in the programme. Some of these young carers are supporting grandparents, while others take on significant responsibilities for their younger siblings.

During the camp, each participant received a holistic healing folder containing introductory tools designed to help them manage anxiety, anger, and begin building self-confidence. The folders have already made a positive impact, with some whanau members reporting that they have started using these tools at home.

The support continued with the first weekly Zoom session with Char Rain and Nate Rain on August 5, which will be held every Monday night. Additionally, the programme’s aspirations coordinator has begun reaching out to the young carers to assess their needs in areas such as schooling, training, and employment. The coordinator is working to provide tailored support, including help with developing CVs and exploring training opportunities.
